- START SMALL AND SLOW. A common mistake beginning runners make is starting an overzealous training routine that leads to burn-out or even injury.
Start out slow with ample rest time (like a light, 20-minute run every other day) so your body can get used to this new activity.
- SET A GOAL AND SHARE IT WITH OTHERS. Let close friends in on your plan and ask them to check in with you on your progress. When you know someone
will be asking how your run went, you’ll want to have a good report to give!
- TRACK YOUR MILES, MOODS, WEATHER AND OTHER DETAILS OF YOUR RUNS. On days you feel burned out and are tempted to skip, pull out your log and refresh
your memory with that “runner’s high”. Even better, dog-ear the pages that detail the days you didn’t want to go out but you did anyway. You may find that
even starting out in low spirits can pick you up for the rest of the day!
- GET A BUDDY! Whether it’s a pooch pal or human companion, having a partner to keep you accountable will make it easier to get out on those off-days.
Just make sure you and your running buddy are at a similar athletic level so you both can get the most out of your workout.
- REWARD YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS. When you achieve a goal, make a new PR or run your first marathon, you have a right to celebrate! Get a massage, go out
for dinner with friends, or do something extra-special for yourself. You deserve a treat! Remember that staying active is one of the greatest things you can
do for yourself and your lifestyle.
