Finding Your Perfect Running Shoes

Narrowing Down The Choices

With so many women's running shoes available, it can be daunting to figure out what shoe is best for you. We?ll try to help you narrow it down.

Running shoes are characterized by breathable, flexible, and lightweight designs. They have a snug fit that helps reduce chafing and avoid heat buildup. When you're trying to pin down which shoes are definitely meant for running, it's a good idea to look for durable, yet lightweight, flexible designs.

Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a shoe meant for running or walking. As a visual cue, walking shoes will often have leather uppers that are made for long-lasting wear, but running shoes have mesh uppers that allow air to flow through the sneaker. A walking shoe will be heavier and look more durable. Walking shoes are designed for miles of low-impact wear, but running shoes are designed to absorb shock and move easily with a runner's agile movements.

To go a step farther, you can choose between running shoes and performance running shoes. Performance running shoes tend to weigh less than a typical running shoe to keep you light on your feet throughout a race or marathon. A shoe that you would run in every day will usually feature more cushioning to help avoid injury. This isn't to say that some performance running shoes can 't have cushioning. Most performance running shoes maintain a light weight, but still absorb shock and cushion your feet.

Your Shoe Type

Running shoes typically come in three different categories: cushioned, stability, and motion control. Depending on how you run, you might find yourself preferring one of these categories. Overpronators, or people whose feet roll outward when they run, usually prefer a stability shoe. This helps alleviate some of the stress put on your body from continuous overpronation.

Motion control shoes are similar to stability shoes, but stronger. They usually come in multiple widths like AA, D, or 2E, so you can find your fit. Some cushioned and stability shoes come in multiple widths as well. If stability shoes aren't strong enough to control your pronation or you find yourself wearing through running shoes very quickly, motion control shoes might be what you're looking for.

For people who don't have any severe pronation, cushioned shoes are a good choice. Cushioned shoes absorb shock and relieve stress on your joints as you run.

So Many Options

With so many options available, how do you know which brand to start with and what to buy? Here are a few of the brands we carry that will have you running comfortably in no time.

Women's Nike running shoes are lightweight and range from extremely flexible to supportive. Keep your feet stable with the lightweight, yet supportive Lunar Glide 6 or Zoom Structure. If you 're leaning toward lightweight and flexible, check out the Nike Free. For a shoe somewhere in the middle, the Flyknit Lunar is flexible, cushioned, and breathable with a combination of Nike's Flyknit upper and plush Lunarlon foam cushioning.

Brooks is an unsung hero of the women's running shoe world, providing motion control shoes like the Arial and Addiction. Both shoes come in a variety of widths from B to 2E, so you can find the perfect fit. For a stability shoe, check out the Ghost. It's currently on its eighth version due to its popularity. The Adrenaline and Glycerin feature comfortable cushioning.

Check out adidas' latest cushioning technology — Boost. Designed to absorb shock and give a responsive feel, you can find it in the cushioned Energy Boost, adiZero Adios Boost, and stable adiStar Boost running shoes. Designed with breathable mesh and a supportive midsole and outsole, the Supernova Sequence 6 is another good choice for runners looking for a stability shoe.

ASICS is known for their cushioned, comfortable running shoes. Operating out of Japan, the company has a research facility where they study athletes to provide the best footwear possible. The most cushioned shoe in their line is the GEL-Nimbus. For a lighter version that still provides ample cushioning, check out the GEL-Cumulus. A stable shoe in ASICS line up, the GEL-Kayano is equipped with GEL cushioning and a supportive midsole.
