Free. What word could better describe how you feel during a run? No distractions — just you, your pace, and the road.
Nike’s “innovation kitchen” took this philosophy to heart a couple of years ago when designing a new line of running shoes. Nike Free running shoes incorporate cutting-edge technology to replicate the barefoot experience — light weight, natural feel, flexibility — while adding underfoot protection and support.
About a decade ago, the Nike design team watched men and women running barefoot in the grass and realized the construction of the traditional running shoe was limiting the natural motion of the foot. When running barefoot the athletes were experiencing a better range of motion strengthening muscles in the feet that were normally unused.
With those targets in mind, the Innovation Kitchen developed some solutions in creating Free technology. To obtain the full range of motion, Nike designers took the sole of a traditional Nike running shoe and made deep grooves in the bottom — flex grooves —which allowed the toes to flex and extend as they would if the runner was running barefoot. Nike added waffle pistons, which absorb impact, to the outsole. The upper was made of a minimum of breathable material to reduce weight and to add the “barefoot” feel.
