Inspired by the three-pronged stability of chicken feet, William Riley created the flexible midsole. He launched the Boston-based New Balance Arch Co. in 1906 to distribute the arch supports. His first customers were police officers, waiters, and people who needed extra support in their shoes for long days on their feet.
In 1960, New Balance (NB) created the Trackster, New Balance's first running shoe that was made in multiple widths. Creating shoes in multiple widths remains a factor that sets New Balance apart from other retailers.
Jim Davis bought the company in 1972 on the day of the Boston Marathon. He proceeded to immerse the company in the running boom during the '70s. He worked with runners to figure out what people needed and wanted from their running shoes. Today, New Balance works with world-class athletes in the New Balance Sports Research Lab.
In 1978, New Balance released the W320, a running shoe built specifically for women. The company continues to innovate and forge ahead today with technologies like the New Balance Minimus, a lightweight, barefoot-inspired class of shoes. What makes New Balance product unique?
Typical B-width shoes are not right for everyone, even though they are the most commonly manufactured width in women's shoes. It can be challenging to find a pair of shoes that's the correct width, so New Balance provides shoes in multiple widths. Lady Foot Locker carries AA, B, D, and 2E widths, which can also be referred to as narrow, medium, wide, and X wide, respectively.
In addition to multiple widths, some New Balance shoes feature a wide forefoot. This design gives extra room for your toes to spread naturally, and it reduces chafing. What product does Lady Foot Locker carry?
Lady Foot Locker carries New Balance shoes and clothing in a variety of categories. The majority of what we carry is designed for running and training. We carry walking, casual, track, outdoor, cleated, and turf shoes as well. Well-known styles include the NB 574, NB 990, and NB 577. The NB 574 gives a stylish, retro-running look. The NB 990 combines cushioning and stability features that are designed for running. The NB 577 is cushioned for a long day of standing or walking.
The NB clothing we carry is designed to perform in the gym, out on a run, and anywhere people want to exercise. Lady Foot Locker carries the whole outfit, including t-shirts, tanks, light jackets, shorts, capris, and more. What does New Balance do, besides make shoes and clothes?
Since its inception, New Balance has been privately held. Because of this, the owners, Jim and Anne Davis, aren't afraid to challenge the industry or support the community.
All labor laws are thoroughly scrutinized and enforced at all New Balance locations. Environmental factors are also given high priority, and NB makes an effort to make their practices healthier for the planet, year after year. Best of all, New Balance makes this information available to the public.
The Davises established the New Balance Foundation in 1981. The foundation's primary focus is fighting against childhood obesity. Other philanthropic endeavors are numerous, and range anywhere from working with the city of Boston to establish a bike rental system, to being a partner of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
